Arts Graduates Named to Order of Canada

Named as Officers of the Order of Canada for 2008:
Raymond Breton [BA(LatPh)/52, LLD/02] O.C.
A world-renowned sociologist and professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Toronto, Raymond Breton has helped to significantly advance our understanding of the impacts multiculturalism and linguistic diversity have on Canadian society.

Gail Asper [BA/81, LLB/84] O.C., O.M.
An arts advocate, fundraiser and business and community leader, Gail Asper is working tirelessly to raise the support and capital required to build the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. The project to create the museum - which is the first of its kind in Canada - was the vision of Asper’s late father Israel “Izzy” Asper.

Named as Members of the Order of Canada for 2008:
Constance Backhouse [BA/72] C.M. 
Distinguished university professor and university research chair at the University of Ottawa’s faculty of law, Constance Backhouse is a human rights activist who has published award-winning material that looks at how women and racialized communities have struggled to obtain justice within the legal system. She was the recipient of a 2008 Killam Prize from the Canada Council for the Arts.

Marcel A. Desautels [BA(LatPh)/55, LLB/59, LLM/65, LLD/99] C.M.
A retired businessman-turned-philanthropist, Marcel A. Desautels has given select Canadian universities - including the University of Manitoba - more than $80 million since he formed the Canadian Credit Management Foundation in 1996. Desautels recently gave his alma mater $20 million to create an endowment fund for the faculty of music (now named the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music) and to help with the renovations of the faculty’s future on-campus location.

Ottawa, July 6, 2008Gail Asper (BA/81), Raymond Breton (BA/52) are Arts graduates named as Officers of the Order of Canada for 2008. Constance Backhouse (BA/72) and Marcel A. Desautels (BA/55) are Arts graduates named as Members of the Order of Canada for 2008.

Ottawa, April 29, 2008 - Constance Backhouse, a BA graduate and recent Celebrated Alumni recipient, has been named as a Killam winner.

Montreal, February 7, 2008 - Sorel Friedman, a BA graduate in French and Russian, won the prestigious 3M Teaching Award.
