Kerniel grew up all over the world, gaining an education in public schools in Fiji, Samoa, Kenya and Canada while also travelling throughout the many countries of the South Pacific, as well as India, Nepal, Egypt and much of Western Europe. Despite this cosmopolitan upbringing, he decided to call Winnipeg home. For over 25 years he has been active in building community, local politics and advocating on social justice issues. Kerniel was a founding member of Bluestem Housing Co-op and continues to be active in promoting co-ops, housing co-ops and an advocate on affordable housing issues. He launched SPARK a service that matches community based organizations with skilled professionals offering to volunteer their expertise. He also is part of a worker co-op that offers facilitation, planning and community based research on housing issues.
