Features and Resources
Interdisciplinary Studio/Workshop

Opportunities are provided for studies with students from other disciplines within the Faculty and from the University generally. Examples have included the "Downtown Footprint", Townscape Studio and Developing Countries projects.

Independent Study
Students may, with the approval of a Faculty member, construct an independent course of study or research on a topic of mutual interest to both parties.

Research units
The Computer Aided Design Laboratory (CADLAB) serves the teaching needs of the Faculty, offering courses and research opportunities. The Faculty has been developing a program in teaching, research and service in the Planning and Design of Sustainable Human Environments, incorporating the resources of all five departments in the Faculty and other units in the University, and in collaboration with the municipal and provincial governments.

Block courses
The Department organises a series of block courses, symposia and visiting lecturers, intended to provide students with the opportunity to interact with faculty and professionals from other parts of the country and overseas, and to be exposed to new ideas and experiences. The block courses are designed to enrich areas of study that are amenable to intensive sessions.

Internships
In 1992 an internship was introduced engaging students during the summer period following their first year of the program. This is arranged in close co-operation with the Manitoba Association of the Canadian Institute of Planners (MPPI). The internship integrates theory and practice, and give students the opportunity to synthesise and apply their planning knowledge and skills as interns. Students are placed with practising planners in planning office settings, private, public, community and n.g.o. sectors. For examples of internship experiences see...

Community and professional linkages
Working relationships are maintained with MPPI, the City of Winnipeg, agencies of the Provincial Government, the Institute of Urban Studies at the University of Winnipeg, the Rural Development Institute at Brandon University, the Centre for Transportation Studies at the University of Manitoba, and many community organisations in the Winnipeg area.

Interdisciplinary Ph.D.
There is no Ph.D Program offered in the Department of City Planning. Students interested in interdisciplinary Ph.D. studies, with planning as one of the disciplines, are encouraged to apply to the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program, Faculty of Graduate Studies. It is possible for candidates with superior academic qualifications in planning, or related fields, to pursue Ph.D. studies in planning and design, provided the research area and program of studies incorporates at least two additional disciplines with Ph.D. programs, and the candidate is admissible to their programs. For further information contact the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Manitoba, tel:(204) 474-9377, fax:(204) 275-6488.

Planning and Design Ph.D.
A new Ph.D. Program is being developed in the Faculty of Architecture. Further details will be included here when available.

Partners Program
The Partners Program is designed to attract members from the professional business and cultural community who wish to become actively involved in the Faculty's program, activities, and special events. The partnering of the community with the Faculty of Architecture will ensure the successful implementation of new initiatives which are of benefit to the school, the design professions, and the community-at-large.

Endowment Fund
The Faculty of Architecture Endowment Fund, established in 1981, is the result of generous contributions by staff, students, alumni and friends. Interest revenue generated from the Fund is allocated for projects or activities providing academic enrichment, or advancing the academic and research goals of the Faculty. The Fund is administered by a committee, consisting of professionals, students and academics. The committee meets annually to review grant applications and disburse the revenue.

The University of Manitoba Association of Planning Students (UMAPS)
The UMAPS is a student organisation very active in academic student affairs and participating in Faculty and Departmental Councils. It is linked with other planning schools and associations including the Canadian Association of Planning Students (CAPS), a national planning students organisation. It also liaises with the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute(MPPI).
