JOB TITLE: Field and Laboratory Assistant (2 positions available)
DESCRIPTION OF POSITION
Conduct agricultural field work on canola and wheat among various locations across Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta
- Monitor weather stations, microclimate stations and rotorods in Winnipeg and Carman daily
- Other field, lab and data entry work as required
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Consideration will be primarily given to students with an interest in agriculture, soil science, plant science, environmental science or biology
- Valid driver’s license required
- Must be a student currently enrolled at the University of Manitoba or University of Winnipeg
- Student must be punctual, hardworking and possess strong organizational and team building skills
PAY: Dependent upon the number of years enrolled in an undergraduate program

Position Overview
Under the supervision of Dr. Don Flaten and graduate student, Laryssa Grenkow, the summer student will assist with two projects: (1) a study analysing the effect of seed-placed phosphorus and sulphur fertilizers on seedling damage and crop yield and quality of canola and (2) a study determining the effect of the preceding crop on the response of canola to nitrogen and sulphur fertilization. The studies will be conducted at the Kelburn and Carman research farms. The position will be for 35 hours a week, starting in the last week of April. The experience will develop both agronomic and technical research skills.
Responsibilities
The summer student will be required to assist with field data collection and processing of soil, biomass, grain and crop emergence counts. He or she must also assist with plot preparation and maintenance, including fertilizer treatment preparations, seeder/sprayer calibrations, tilling around plots, herbicide spraying.
Qualifications:
A valid driver’s licence and ability to run small farm equipment is an asset but not mandatory. The summer student must posses strong communication skills, demonstrate initiative and be punctual. He or she must be able to work in a group and individually as well as pay strong attention to detail.

Field and Laboratory Assistant Positions
with the Soil Ecology Laboratory Summer Research Team
University of Manitoba
The Soil Ecology Laboratory at the University of Manitoba, Department of Soil Science, is recruiting five students to be summer research assistants. The assistants will be involved with field and laboratory studies working under the immediate supervision of research associates and graduate students. The positions are 35 hours per week and start the last week of April. Duties will vary for each position as some will focus on laboratory, or field, or a combination of both study types. The Soil Ecology conducts research in plant-parasitic nematodes, nutrient management, molecular ecology and diagnostics, practices to lower greenhouse gas emissions, methods to control potato diseases, composting, and sustainable agricultural systems. Students are sought that are enrolled in University programs including Agroecology, Agronomy, Biology, Botany, Engineering, Entomology, Environment, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Physical Geography, Plant Pathology, and Soil Science. Preference will be given to those in program senior years with excellent academic achievement. Salary is dependent upon the student’s program year as set out by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences pay guidelines.

Graduate Position in Stable Nitrogen Isotope Techniques and Nitrous Oxide Emisisons at the University of Manitoba
The Soil Ecology Laboratory at the University of Manitoba is seeking a highly motivated and talented M.Sc. or Ph.D. student for the project “Development of a Stable Nitrogen Isotope Technique for Source Partition and N 2O:N 2 Ratio Determination of N 2O Emissions from Soil ”. The project involves detailed tracking of native and labelled nitrogen in soil in addition to partitioning of label into gaseous products and in the soil-plant system. Only students with exceptional academic history (GPA > 3.5/4.0) will be considered. The position will be open until an excellent candidate is found. The project is to start as soon as availability of the student and graduate acceptance procedures have been completed. The project is of great importance to the commodity groups, farmers, the fertilizer industry and policy makers, thus frequent communication as reports and presentations with project sponsors is required. The candidate will have exceptional abilities to communicate with the partners and have advanced understanding of nitrogen cycling and Canadian crop production systems.

Graduate Positions in Land Remediation
Two graduate student positions at the M.Sc. level are available in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Manitoba (www.umanitoba.ca/faculties/afs/soil_science/). The research will focus on the use of wetland systems and traditional phytoremediation for remediation of decommissioned municipal lagoons. The positions are available starting September 2011 but a later start date can be accommodated if necessary. Stipends of $16,500 per year will be available to successful candidates. Graduate Position in Atmospheric Dispersion over Forests
Starting September 2011, a graduate student position at the M.Sc. level is available in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Manitoba (www.umanitoba.ca/afs/soil_science). The research focuses on improving our knowledge of atmospheric dispersion climatologies over Canadian forests to aid forest managers in decisions related to aerial spraying for insect control. The project is partially supported by the Spray Efficacy Research Group (SERG International: www.sergreport.net/). The project will include statistical analyses of atmospheric dispersion conditions using data from the Fluxnet/Canadian Carbon Program flux towers at various locations across Canada (www.fluxnet-canada.ca/). Research Associate/Postdoctoral Fellow
Determinants of Potato Early Dying in Manitoba
The University of Manitoba is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to head the project “Determinants of Potato Early Dying in Manitoba”. The individual will conduct the majority of their work in the Soil Ecology and the Potato Pathology Laboratories within the Departments of Soil Science and Plant Science. The project involves conducting/managing plant and soil sampling, in-field disease assessments and progress, pathogen isolations and enumerations, molecular confirmation of pathogen identities, data analysis, and report and manuscript preparation. Experience with laboratory techniques in plant pathology, molecular techniques, PCR primer design, identification of disease symptoms and fungi, a peer-review publication record and a minimum of a M.Sc. is required. The position is available April 1, 2012 to April 30, 2013, dependent upon funding. The project is collaboration with the Manitoba Horticulture Productivity Enhanced Corporation. The candidate will have exceptional abilities to communicate with the partner and present findings to farmers and members of the potato industry as well as write peer-review papers.
The individual will be working under the supervision of Drs. Mario Tenuta and Fouad Daayf. Dr. Tenuta is the Canada Research Chair in Applied Soil Ecology and Dr. Daayf Professor of Plant Pathology and Associate Head of the Department of Plant Science. Plant Nematology: Host Preference and Species Determination of Ditylenchus from the Canadian Prairie Provinces
The Soil Ecology Laboratory at the University of Manitoba is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to head the project “Determination of the Host Status of Field Pea and Associated Rotation Crops and Weeds to the Stem and Bulb Nematode in the Canadian Prairies ”. The individual will conduct the work individually and supervising technicians. The project involves using population of Ditylenchus to developing culturing methods, conducting PCR primer specific and morphology based identification protocols, conduct plant-host screening assays, and conduct AFLP and microsatellite assays. Experience working with plant nematodes and a minimum of a M.Sc. in plant nematology, plant pathology or soil ecology is required. Expertise in conducting molecular techniques, PCR primer design, quantitative PCR and/or morphological identification of nematodes is preferred. The position will be open until an excellent candidate is found. The candidate will have exceptional writing abilities to prepare reports and peer-reviewed papers, as well as be highly motivated to be a research scientist that includes strengthening their publication record. The position is open February 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience ranging from $42,000 to $52,000 per year plus benefits.
