OVERVIEW

The Department of Plant Science plays an important role in educating both undergraduate and graduate students in basic plant sciences and applied crop production. As well, it maintains an active research program directed at developing superior cultivars and new production systems suited to the changing needs of Manitoba farmers and the agri-food industry.

The Department has a large laboratory and greenhouse complex and excellent field facilities for training students and conducting research in areas such as plant breeding, molecular genetics, host-pathogen interactions, agronomy and crop management, weed control and physiology. Research spans a wide range of crops including canola, cereals, alfalfa, potatoes and both tame and native grasses.

In recent years the Department has maintained its long-standing strengths in areas such as crop breeding, plant pathology and horticultural science, and placed new emphasis on cropping systems research, forage production and plant biotechnology. This is reflected in the teaching curriculum, as well as in the research program.
