High Erucic Acid Rapeseed Breeding Academic Position
The Department of Plant Science, University of Manitoba, invites applications
for a full time tenure-track assistant professor position in Brassica breeding
with an emphasis on High Erucic Acid Rapeseed (HEAR) breeding. The HEAR breeding
program has been a continuously funded, successful research and development
program at the University of Manitoba for over 30 years, with continued strong
industry support expected. The Department’s Brassica breeding programs
have a solid foundation of HEAR/canola germplasm and associated intellectual
property. The transition to hybrid novel herbicide tolerant HEAR cultivars
is occurring currently. The University of Manitoba is committed to the long-term
continuation of the HEAR breeding program. The HEAR breeding position will
start on January 1, 2012 or as soon as possible thereafter. Candidates must
have a Ph.D. in plant breeding and genetics. Proven experience in planning
and conducting field and controlled environment research and in experimental
design and analysis is essential. Knowledge of novel herbicide tolerant and
hybrid oilseed Brassica breeding would be a definite asset. Preference will
be given to candidates who have oilseed Brassica breeding experience, who
have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong research and
publication record, proven teaching experience, and leadership qualities.
The successful candidate will be expected to teach diploma, undergraduate
degree, and post-graduate courses in genetics, plant breeding and/or general
crop production, and to supervise post-graduate students. The position also
requires the development and maintenance of an externally-funded research
program that addresses fundamental and applied areas of science related to
HEAR cultivar development. The successful candidate is expected to work collaboratively
with industry, with other faculty members, and with scientists at other institutions,
and to interact with producers and extension specialists.
Consideration of applications will begin June 30, 2011. Applications, including
i) curriculum vitae, ii) official transcripts, iii) statements of teaching
philosophy and research interests, iv) reprints of up to five recent publications
and v) a list of three references with contact information including email
