STUDENT ADMISSIONS INFORMATION
Thank you for your
interest in the University of Manitoba.
We would be pleased
to discuss the possibility of your graduate work in the Department
of Food Science, however, opportunity for study is dependent
on your being able to secure a member of the Department's
academic staff as your advisor, and by meeting the acceptance
criteria.
The minimum standard
for acceptance into any category in the Faculty of Graduate
Studies is a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) or equivalent in
the last two previous years of full time study (60 credit
hours). Graduates of honours ( 4 year undergraduate degree)
or equivalent programs from recognized colleges and universities
are eligble for direct admission into a Masters program.
Normally, entry
to Ph.D. study requires a Master's degree or equivalent from
a recognized university and a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above
in the last two previous years of full time study (60 credit
hours) along with a 4 year undergraduate honours degree. (See

Funding and Awards
You may want to explore the various research interests of the Food Science Academic staff and indicate on your application a staff member or research area you would be interested in. Some funding may be available but not always. Individual research programs are available through the RESEARCH link
A very limited
number of scholarships and fellowships are available to highly
qualified applicants. If you are a highly qualified applicant
(Minimum requirement for University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship
GPA > 3.65) it is in your interest to disclose in your
application that you are applying for a scholarship.
Application proceeds
through the Faculty of Graduate Studies and then the Department. Please also note that there is an application fee
payable to University of Manitoba. As of Dec. 15, 2009 the application fee for Canadian Citizens/Permanent Residents and International Applicants will be $100.00. A copy of a birth certificate or passport is now required for all applicants even if they have already attended the University of Manitoba.

NOTE: Applications
will be considered at any time. Students planning on studying at University of Manitoba should have their applications sent to Graduate Studies 7 months prior to their anticipated start date. The application deadlines
for receipt to the Faculty of Graduate Studies is merely to
ensure sufficient time for students to register in the session
to which they are applying.
Pre-Master's
Program Information
Student's entering
graduate studies with a B.Sc. in a field other than Food Science
may be required to do a qualifying program of study referred
to as a "Pre-Masters." In order to be eligible for
admission to a "Pre-Masters", the applicant must
possess a bachelor's degree and must have a cumulative Grade
Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 (B) or better in the last two full
years of the undergraduate program.
The Pre Masters
program generally involves one year (i.e. two terms) of study
with the student completing 24 credit hours of classes (usually
4 courses/term). The student must maintain a minimum GPA 3.0
with no grade below C+ in order to continue pre-master's study.
The procedure
for registering for a Pre-Master's program involves applying
for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. Upon completion
of the Pre-Masters, the student may be considered for an M.Sc.
Program in the Department of Food Science; however admission
to a Pre-Master's program does not necessarily guarantee future
admission to a Master's program.

Admission
Admission requirements are those of the Faculty of Graduate
Studies found in the Graduate Studies Regulations.
Admission Deadlines
Applicants should submit their application and
supporting documentation to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at least 7 months
prior to their intended start date.
The departments
involved in the Interdepartmental Ph.D. program are Animal
Science, Human Nutritional Sciences and Food Science
