Dr. Don Flaten

Don Flaten

Dr. Flaten's training includes a Ph.D. with specialization in Soil Chemistry and Fertility.

General Research Interests:

Effects of management practices on supplies of N, P, K, S and micronutrients supplied from soil reserves, various forms and types of fertilizers, livestock manures, industrial byproducts and municipal waste and their impact on crop yield, crop quality, agricultural sustainability and environmental quality.

Current Projects:

  • Phosphorus fertilization beneficial management practices for soybeans in Manitoba (With Gustavo Bardella (MSc student), Yvonne Lawley, John Heard, and Cindy Grant).
  •  Manitoba corn initiative - corn agronomy, fertility, and agrometeorology project … eg. corn P and Zn fertilization after canola; corn P fertilization for strip till vs. conventional till (With Yvonne Lawley (PI), Magda Rogalsky (MSc student), Mario Tenuta, Lana Reid, Paul Bullock, Derek Brewin).
  • Timing and source of fertilizer nitrogen application to improve crop performance and limit nitrogen losses to the environment (Tenuta PI)
  • Long term nutrient management BMPs for manure applied to annual and perennial crops.
  • Agronomic evaluation of separated manure solids as fertilizers and soil amendments under Manitoba conditions.
  • Development of a risk indicator to identify soils prone to phosphorus release under prolonged flooding (With Kumaragamage as PI).
  • Investigating P release from different types of Manitoba soils under flooded conditions (With Kumaragamage as PI).
  • Feasibility of innovative water and crop management practices to reduce nutrient loading from agricultural watersheds (With Lobb as PI).
  • Integrated agri-environmental assessment of bale grazing overwintering for beef cows (with Gwen Donohoe (PhD student) and Kim Ominski; part of Brian Amiro’s AAFC-AGGP project on BMPs for reducing GHG emissions from beef cow-calf production systems).
  • Evaluation of beneficial watershed management practices in the South Tobacco Creek model watershed (with David Lobb, Jane Elliott and AAFC).
