The Governor General of Canada offers an annual gold medal called The Governor General’s Gold Medal to recognize the outstanding performance of a graduate student. This award is based on overall academic excellence through coursework, research, awards and distinctions, letters of reference, external examiner’s report and a description of the student’s statement on the significance of their research. Eligibility for the medal is open to all students who will be convocating with a Master’s or a Ph.D. at Spring Convocation (this includes those students who have a February grad date) or who graduated the previous Fall at the University of Manitoba.

      1. a letter from the Dean/Director of the Faculty/Unit giving a detailed rationale for the nomination
      2.  the nominee’s curriculum vitae
      3. an official University of Manitoba transcript
      4. a brief statement (one page) from the nominee on the significance of his/her research and related achievements during the graduate program, whereas for nominees in non-research based programs, rationale for choosing the program, significance of work (breadth of knowledge gained) and expected contribution to his/her career aspirations

      6. the report from the external examiner. For Masters thesis, the report from the examiner external to the home department of the nominee is required (where applicable). The Dean shall act as Chair.

Please check with your faculty/unit if you are interested in being nominated for the award. The deadline for faculties and units to have their nominations to FGS is April 1, however the deadline by which a faculty/unit wants to have nominations submitted to them will most likely be earlier.
