Student Counselling and Career Centres at Bannatyne: S207 Medical Services Building

Put simply, free counselling-strictly confidential-with flexible times and locations, and drop-in times available. Whether you just want to talk something over or you have a serious concern, we are available.

Hours of Operation: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 12 noon to 7:00 P.M.. Also available for drop-in meetings when our door is open. Please note that at times counsellors may not be in the office due to other commitments.

Announcing the Bannatyne Counselling Team:

Mondays: Prof. Gavriela Geller integrates a variety of counselling approaches within a client-centred, humanistic frame work to help people with a number of issues, including: anxiety, assertiveness, cultural transition, depression, managing stress, relationships, self-exploration  and self-esteem. Gavriela has previous experience working with students at a medical school and she appreciates the unique challenges and opportunities that exist in this environment. Gavriela is particularly interested in supporting graduate medical students progress successfully through their academic programs. She also enjoys working with students who are new to Winnipeg or to Canada who may want some support making the transition to our community.

Wednesdays: Prof. David Ness has been with the Student Counselling and Career Centre at the Fort Garry Campus for over 10 years and is returning for his second year of work at the Bannatyne campus. David favours a cognitive, developmental and client-centered approach to counselling and he uses this approach to work with a wide range of presenting difficulties including:  self-esteem, anxiety, depression, trauma recovery, cultural transitions and issues, stress, family conflict, and identity development.
David is particularly interested in relationship issues, identity development, gender issues, career planning, and harassment issues. He has strong beliefs in the benefit of leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle and he is looking forward to sharing this perspective with students and staff at the Bannatyne campus.
David will be the acting coordinator of the Bannatyne team in Margaret Tobin's absence. 

Thursdays: Prof. Kathryn Ritchot takes great interest in working with individuals and groups tofocus on their strenghts, while they address their personal and educational challenges. Kathryn believes that the therapeutic relationship can be a tremendous resource to overcome such challenges as depression; anxiety; low self-esteem; interpersonal trauma; and concerns about identity, careers, relationships, communication, and assertiveness. Kathryn's emphasis in on gaining self-knowledge, self-appreciation and empowerment.

Margaret Tobin is a social worker with over 20 years of experience working with university students in Manitoba, England and Australia. She has been working with students at the Bannatyne campus since 1995. Margaret has a holistic perspective and integrates many different approaches to address themes such as:
managing stress, enhancing self-esteem, strengthening conscious choice, dealing with relationships,  changing limiting beliefs, exploring identity, and integrating the resources of mind, body, spirit,  heart and soul. Margaret is strongly committed to helping students tap their potential and achieve what they desire in both their academic and personal lives. Margaret is the coordinator of the Bannatyne team. Margaret will be on sabbatical until Fall, 2005.
