Commercialization
Management (IPTCM)
In Partnership with the Technology Transfer Office (TTO) University of Manitoba
The IPTCM Certificate consists of a blend of courses in intellectual property, technology commercialization, and management. The certificate consists of four core courses and two elective courses.
Learn to: Assess the technical and market feasibility for innovations developed through basic and applied research; Identify and protect intellectual property; Raise investment capital; and Market new products, processes and services.

Admission Requirements
To be admitted to the program, students will normally be required to have one of the following:
- A minimum of an undergraduate degree
- A community college diploma in Arts, Science, Business or Technology
- A university certificate in Business, Technology, or Humanities
- At least six months work experience in the IPM and TCM fields
Who Should Attend?
- Professionals involved in business development, management of assets, or marketing research
- Lawyers who want to enter IP practice
- Professionals who have responsibility for managing contracts, patents and license agreements
- Paralegals, MBAs, engineers, scientists and business development practitioners who wish to understand IP rights and how the management of those rights can build value for a business
- Executives and managers who are in transition from products-based to IP rights-based businesses
- Managers, inventors, lab researchers, lawyers, engineers, graduate students in Technology, Liberal Arts, Science or Business, and entrepreneurs
Students who have not met the admission requirements listed above, but have work experience in related fields (e.g., Finance, Law, and Marketing), will be considered for admission. The Program Director, in consultation with the Advisory Committee, will have authority for admission decisions.
Students must complete the Continuing Education Application to Enter Certificate Program for admission to the program, and the Continuing Education Course Registration Form to register for a course. Registration is based on a first come first served basis.
Required Courses
Four core courses:
- Intellectual Property Management – Level I
- Intellectual Property Management – Level II*
- Technology Commercialization Management – Level I
- Technology Commercialization Management – Level II**
**Prerequisite: TCM Level I
Note: TCM courses may be taken before IPM courses.
Elective Courses
One course from the following list:
- Introduction to Marketing
- Canadian Business Law
- Using Accounting Information (available by distance) or Managerial Accounting
- Financial Management or Business Finance
- Canadian Business: An Introduction or Essentials of Management (available by distance)

Grading
All required courses are graded on the U of M letter grade system. Students must complete each course in the program with a minimum passing grade of C or higher and achieve an overall GPA of C+ or higher in order to receive the IPTCM Certificate.
Students will be evaluated using a number of methods, including but not limited to, experiential exercises, written assignments, case studies, in-class presentations, and workplace-based projects.
Certification/Graduation
To qualify for graduation, you must successfully complete all program requirements in a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years from the date of admission into the Program and achieve an overall grade point average of “C+” or higher. Students eligible to graduate, must submit the Continuing Education Application for Graduation by the deadline indicated on the form.
It is the responsibility of each student to be familiar with the graduation requirements of the program in which they enrolled.
