IST Smart Phones

What is a Smart Phone?

A smart phone combines your calendar, your email, web browsing, and cellular phone technology into one device. Eg: Blackberries, iPhones, and Android devices.

What kind of smart phone should I get?

With a huge variety of smartphones available today, it's become difficult to give recommendations as to what smartphone may or may not be best for you.

The selection of smartphones available is ever-changing, and ultimately your decision in which phone is right for you comes down to your own personal preferences.

Smartphone Features

Despite which device you choose, there are some common features every smartphone will have (with a purchased data plan)

  • Email: stay connected by receiving your U of M email instantly
  • Calendar: depending on your device, you may sync your device's calendar to Oracle Calendar, Jump Calendar, or Microsoft Outlook
  • Contact list: maintain and synchronize to your desktop computer
  • Easy to read and work with excel, word and pdf documents.
  • Browse the Internet
  • A huge selection of applications and software
  • Camera, Bluetooth, etc.

How much does a smartphone and the monthly plans cost?

For plans and costs associated with purchasing a Smart Phone, please contact the Telecommunications office at (204) 474-7882. Phones must be purchased and charged to a UofM budget account.

When deciding on a cellular provider, service coverage should be considered. MTS Is North American coverage, while Rogers is International Coverage.
