Cellular services for University of Manitoba faculty and staff are available from two providers:
For new service activations - you will be able to select from the various provincial, regional, national and corporate plans. If you find your cellular usage pattern changes, you can move to another rate plan.
Certain models of cellular phones are available at no cost with a selected service agreement. Purchased equipment prices vary based on selection of the service agreement.
Existing subscribers may select to change vendors once their current service agreement has expired. Note that a change in vendors will require that you change your cellular phone number.
Visit the suppliers' websites or talk with our consulting staff at 474-7882.
Activation of Cellular Service
To complete one of the enclosed Cellular / Pager order forms, indicate the department information, the budget number and authorizing signature and fax to (474-7536) or deliver the completed form to the Telephone Office, Rm. 135A Machray Hall.
Upon receipt, you will be contacted by the U of M cell phone specialist who will provide you with information on the Corporate rate plans. The Telephone Office can make arrangements to order the equipment if you know which cell phone you would like to purchase from the information on the carrier websites. The vendor will deliver the equipment to your department or the Telephone Office complete with order form indicating rate plan, contract term and new cellular phone number. Your new cellular phone will normally be available within 2 days.
Another option is for the department to go directly to the vendor listed at the top of the form to pick out their cellular phone. This would enable the user to view the different products available and see the various options on each cellular phone. The vendor can activate the phone on site and the user can take the phone with them and not have a waiting period for their phone. The department would need to bring a copy of the form with their department information, budget number and authorizing signature completed to the vendor. The vendor would then fill in their portion of the form for submission back to the Telephone Office. This enables the Telephone Office to automatically bill under the University Corporate account.
Cell phone pricing is varied. Only selected models are free when matched with a specific contract term. Many models must be purchased at an additional cost. The price of the cell phone needs to be put on your department Visa. If your department does not have a Visa, then the department will need to do a purchase requisition and forward it to the Telephone Office. The monthly charges will be put on our Corporate account and an ID charge will be put through monthly by the Telephone Office directly to the department budget number.
Deactivation of Cellular Service
If you no longer require service on your cell phone you need to contact the U of M cell phone specialist to have the phone deactivated. The Telephone Office will then verify the status of the contract to see if the cellular phone is off contract and whether or not there will be charges for cancellation. The Telephone Office will take the necessary steps to deactivate the phone for you.
All cellular phones have a monthly system access fee. This fee is between $6.50 and $7.00. There are many rate plans available beginning around $20.00 per month. There is no activation fee for a basic plan on a new activation. A wide range of features can be added with the activation of your new cell phone. ie. voice mail, caller ID, and 2 way text messaging.
