Computer Setup (Windows XP)

The instructions below are for on campus computer setup. This includes desktop machines as well as laptops. You should have your CompuRep setup your workstation. If for some reason this is not possible, please follow the below instructions.

Windows Firewall Novell Setup
Antivirus Program
Windows Updates
Further Considerations

Initial Windows Setup
Turn on your computer and go through Windows installation / setup without connecting to the Internet or a Network.

Windows Firewall
Once your computer is setup, install Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) from CD (if not included on the XP install cd), or turn on Microsoft's Internet Connection Firewall as follows:

  1. Click start and click on Control Panel
  2. If the window says Pick a category, open Network and Internet Connections
  3. Open Network Connections
  4. Right-click on Local Area Connection and select Properties
  5. Click on the Advanced tab
  6. Check Protect my computer and network...
  7. Click OK
  8. Close the Network Connections window
This firewall will protect your computer from most viruses that spread using flaws in the Windows operating system. SP2 improves the firewall and turns it on by default. You will need to ensure the following ports are open in the windows firewall:
  • For Novell (on campus only): UDP/TCP 524, 427, 1761,1762,1763
  • For Trend (irrelevant proceedure prior to Trend install): TCP 1105
  • Network Settings (On campus only)
Set your Computer Name and your Workgroup name.

  • You should use your Container name for the Workgroup name. If you are unsure of your container, please contact your Computer Representative.
  • If you have a laptop, append lp to your Workgroup name.
  • Note: You will have to restart the machine.

    Antivirus Program
With the firewall turned on it is relatively safe to connect your computer to the Internet. Install the Trend antivirus program from:
    – On campus staff: https://osce.cc.umanitoba.ca/
    – Off campus / Laptop staff: https://osav.cc.umanitoba.ca/

    Windows Updates
By the time you get your computer, the version of Windows that is pre-installed on your computer will be out of date. Microsoft provides regular software updates for Windows, many of which are critical security fixes. You should configure Windows to automatically download these updates and install them automatically from the University of Manitoba's Windows Software Update Server, referred to as the WSUS server. This can be done by downloading and adding some Windows Registry keys from the Netware Container Admin resource webpage at http://netware.umanitoba.ca/forusers/.

    Novell Setup (On campus only)
Windows computers used on campus on the network should be configured to access the CNS Novell network. You can install the Novell client from http://fenchurch.cc.umanitoba.ca/pages/foradmins.shtml.

Simply download and install the appropriate file. Then reboot the machine and log onto the Novell network to complete the next step.

It is also recommend that along with the Novell login client, that the Novell Zen Agent be installed. This allows Container Administrators to manage you workstation and deploy network software updates and installations. To install Zen, after logging into the Novell network, open My Computer and browse to T:\Windows.XP\Landaus\ZfDAgent and run the install.bat file.

    Further Considerations

  • Install optional programs such as adobe acrobat reader, flash, java, to ensure browser usability.
  • Install and configure any email clients, ensure the client is configured to access the UofM LDAP directory.
  • To simplify network management, ensure that your CompuRep knows your mac addresss so that they are able to assign you a static IP address.
