The operating system of choice for use at The University of Manitoba still continues to be Windows XP Professional. We currently recommend that Windows XP Professional be purchased when possible upon the purchase of a new computer.
IST is currently supporting Windows Vista in terms of corporate applications.
Currently most vendors support Windows Vista. As such, if we find an application that is not supported it will be addressed on this webpage (eg: IP Printing from Novell is not supported at this time).
Additional Notes:
IST supports the Vista Business and Vista Ultimate products. The Vista Home product will not be supported for use on campus.
There is on going discussion to determine when best to purchase the 32 bit version or 64 bit version but this will be best worked out by the vendor of purchase as the hardware needs to support the 64 bit version.

Novell Client
As of October 3rd, an IST Novell Installer was put together by LAN Support. The Vista Client has been packaged to provide SLP and contextless login functionality.

We are currently using Zenworks to distribute software to clients computers.
Zenworks 7 was initially expected to support Vista. The vendor has since revoked this statement, requiring the implementation of Zenworks Confiuration Manager 10. At this time we have completed our current inventory of installers for Zenworks 10.
We will continue moving forward with all new installers and objects using Zenworks 10 only. As Zenworks 10 supports Windows 2000, XP Professional, and Vista Business and Ultimate, this is not a technical problem.
It will however be a logistical problem for those Container Administrators who have Zenworks objects developed using Zenworks 7. As well, people will need to have the Zenworks 10 client installed on their workstations as required. Hence, we will continue to maintain our present Zenworks 7 objects for the next few months.
Microsoft Office 2007
IST has developed a Microsoft Office 2007 installer. The installer requires the Novell client, and a CNS account.
The installer is available through your container administrator and on Novell CNS T:\Windows\Installers\Office2007\office2007_installer.exe
This installer will only work on a Vista computer that has the ovell client installed and configured.
For those not on Novell, IST provides our clients with the ability to purchase a copy of Microsoft Office 2007 from the bookstore for a very low price. Clients are limited to one copy per user, which is tied to the individual.
Microsoft has released Service Pack 1. We ask that faculty and staff do not install Service Pack 1 on their computer(s) without first consulting their container administrator.
Libraries
Libraries have not discovered any issues to date with their products and Vista
Open Area Computer Labs - Extreme Login Ports
Network Login is now working with Vista. Former issues with Vista have been addressed campus wide with a recent switch code release.
If you experience problems with Network Login, please contact the IST Support Desk at 474-8600.
Wireless / Secure W2
The Support Desk reports at this time that SecureW2 is working on most Vista laptops. There are some wireless devices that are still having problems, however these problems are generally resolved by installing updated software/drivers from the wireless card vendor. Specific questions may be directed towards the Support Desk.

VIP
The VIP HR/Payroll system has been Vista certified by the vendor, and we've completed the Zenworks 10 installers for Oracle 11G Instant Client (32bit) which is compatible with Vista and DLGL VIP for Human Resources (32bit).
(Note we have still have compatibility problems with the Oracle 11G Instant Client (64bit) and VIP which does not currently run under 64bit Vista.)
Aurora
We are unaware of any difficulties using Aurora under Vista at this time.
