Use of P2P Software
In a "Peer to Peer" network, the peers are computer systems which are connected to each other via the Internet. Files can be shared directly between systems on the network without the need of a central server. In other words, each computer on a P2P network becomes a file server as well as a client.

You can search for files on other people's computers, and other users on the network can search for files on your computer within designated folders.

Common P2P software programs include BitTorrent, eDonkey, Kazaa, Limewire, and Morpheus.

The use of P2P software has many possible negative effects including introduction of viruses, impact on networks, etc. Legal action taken on behalf of the copyright holder will name both the individual involved and the University.

For this reason IST does not allow the use of P2P software by University staff unless there is a direct and irrefutable work or academic-related reason for its use.
