Secure Disposal of Old Personal Computers

Personal and personal health information held by the University must be maintained confidentially. University Policy FIPPA and PHIA all emphasize the importance of the confidential retention and, when appropriate, destruction of personal information.

Please be aware that if you are disposing of a personal computer containing University material, research databases and/or personal information, it is not enough to erase data by simply deleting the files on your hard drive.

Old personal computers with University related information need to be erased completely. If they are not, it is possible that the next user or owner could reconstruct these files. The consequences of this could include the unintended disclosure of confidential information or the distribution of licensed software to a third party not licensed for that software.

IST strongly suggests the use of Darik's Boot and Nuke (DBAN).   DBAN is a free product and can be found at:
    dban.sourceforge.net

If you have any questions regarding the use of the software, please contact your department container administrator.

(Further instructions can be found on the IST Hardware website.)
