How do I display the headers for an email message?
The display of full headers can give you useful information as to the real identity of the person who sent you the message.

If you're sent spam or harassing email you can display the full headers and forward a copy of the email including headers to the IST Security Coordinator.

To display the full headers within:

  1. Outlook
    • Outlook 2007
      1. Open a message.
      2. On the Message tab, in the Options group, click the Dialog Box Laucher  Icon 
image.

        In the Message Options dialog box, the headers appear in the Internet headers box.

    • Outlook 2003
      • When viewing messages click on View then click on Options. The full message headers are displayed in the bottom of the window that opens.
    • Express
      • When viewing messages click on View select all headers .
  2. Webmail
    • Click the Message Source link in the section of the Message view, above the date. This will show you the raw mail message in the mailbox, including full headers (and any attachments in encoded form).
  3. Thunderbird
    • When viewing a message click on View, then on headers and select all.
  4. Pine
    • When viewing a message press h.
  5. Eudora
    • Double click on the message to open it, and then click on the blah blah blah button.
       
  6. Hotmail
    • First, configure your options:     
      On the upper right "Options | Help" links, click on "Options." Click on the "Mail Display Settings" link, find the item "Message Headers." Choose "Advanced" and click the "OK" button.
    • Then, to report spam: 
      When viewing a message, use the "View E-mail Message Source" to display the message in raw mode before copying into SpamCop. (This link is right below the headers.) 
       
  7. Gmail
    • Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
    • Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message pane.
    • Press the "Message Source" button to view the entire message, headers and all.
    • Select Show original.
       
  8. Mac Mail
    • Open the message you'd like to view headers for.
    • Click the down arrow next to Reply, at the top-right of the message pane.
    • Press the "Message Source" button to view the entire message, headers and all.
    • Select Show original.
