Thunderbird 3.0 instructions for Windows (IMAP)

Basic IMAP Setup
LDAP (U of M addressbook search)


Basic Setup

1. In Mozilla Thunderbird, click on Tools and click Account Settings

2. Click on Account Actions drop-down box, then click Add Mail Account
   

3. Type in your name the way you'd like others to see it.
    Type in your U of M email address. 
    Type in your U of M email password.
   

4. Click Continue

5. Thunderbird is now going to try to guess the settings for your U of M Email.
    These settings are incorrect and must be adjusted.
   

6. Click on the Edit button. 
 
    Ensure your username is correct:
      eg: umnetid@cc.umanitoba.ca and not First_Last@umanitoba.ca)
 
    Fill out the rest of the boxes as shown in the image below.



7. Click 

8. Click on Create Account
    

9. You're all done! Thunderbird will now verify your password is correct 
    and complete the account setup. If the account Settings window is still
    open, you can now close it to view your email.

   


LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol)

Configuring an email client to use the U of M LDAP server provides quick and easy access to U of M student and employee email addresses.

1. In Mozilla Thunderbird click on Tools and click on Options

2. Choose Composition and click on the Addressing tab

3. Fill in the checkbox for Directory Server and click on Edit Directories

4. Click Add

The Directory Server Properties window now appears.
Enter the following Information:
  • Name: U of M
  • Hostname: direct.cc.umanitoba.ca
  • Base DN: o=University of Manitoba,c=CA
  • Port number: 389
  • Bind DN: (leave this blank)
  • Click on OK until you close each window
You are now finished the LDAP configuration. You will now be able to search for U of M People when composing an email.
