Mail 2.1 Instructions for OSX (IMAP)

This page provides instructions to the Mail 2.1 user who needs to create an IMAP account There are two sets of instructions:

  1. Creating an account for the first time
  2. Creating an additional account


Creating an account for the first time

Basic Setup
If  it is the first time configuring an account, Mail will guide the user though the configuration process with a wizard.

1. Click the Mail icon.

2. At the Welcome screen, click Continue.

3. Change the Account Type option to IMAP. Enter a descriptive name in Account Description (ex. UofM IMAP). In Full Name, enter the full name as you would like it to be seen by the people you are sending to. Enter your email address in Email Address.

Click Continue.

4. Enter mail.cc.umanitoba.ca in Incoming Mail Server. Enter the UMnetID and corresponding password in User Name and  Password.

Click Continue.

5. Enter mail.cc.umanitoba.ca in Outgoing Mail Server. Fill in the checkbox for Use Authentication. Enter the UMnetID and corresponding password in User Name and Password.

Click Continue.

6. At the Account Summary screen, ensure that all the information that you just entered is correct. Click Continue.

7. At the Conclusion screen, click Done.


Creating an additional account

Basic Setup
1. From the Mail menu, select Preferences... 

2. Ensure that your are in the Accounts menu by clicking the Accounts icon.

3. Click the plus (+) to add an account.

4. Change the Account Type option to IMAP. Enter a descriptive name in Account Description (ex. UofM IMAP). In Full Name, enter the full name as you would like it to be seen by the people you are sending to. Enter your email address in Email Address.

Click Continue.

5. Enter mail.cc.umanitoba.ca in Incoming Mail Server. Enter the UMnetID and corresponding password in User Name and  Password.

Click Continue.

6. Enter mail.cc.umanitoba.ca in Outgoing Mail Server. Fill in the checkbox for Use Authentication. Enter the UMnetID and corresponding password in User Name and Password.

Click Continue.

7. At the Account Summary screen, ensure that all the information that you just entered is correct. Click Continue.

8. At the Conclusion screen, click Done.


Alternate Port Settings (Outgoing only)
The email client may need to be configured to access the outgoing mail server using an alternate port. This needs to be done if your are using MTS as your ISP and need to send email using the UofM outgoing mail server.

1. From the Mail menu, select Preferences...

2. Ensure that your are in the Accounts menu by clicking the Accounts icon.

3. In the Accounts column, select the University of Manitoba account that you created.

4. In the Account Information region, click on the Server Settings button.

5. Change the Server port to 587, in the Authentication menu select MD5 Challenge-Response, and enter your UMnetID and the corresponding password in the User Name and Password fields.

Click OK.


LDAP
Mail uses the Mac OSX Address Book to store contacts. The Address Book can be configured to search the University of Manitoba directory for faculty, staff and student's contact information.

1. Click the Address Book icon.

2. From the Address Book menu, select Preference...

3. Ensure that you are in the LDAP menu by clicking the LDAP icon.

4. Click the plus (+) to add an account.

5. Fill in a descriptive name such as UofM LDAP in Name, in Server enter direct.cc.umanitoba.ca, in Search Base enter o=Univeristy of Manitoba,c=CA exatly as you see it here.

6. Leave the authentication option empty, no authentication is required.

Click Save.

7. You should be able to see the entry we created and it should look like the image below.

Close the window.

To use the University of Manitoba directory to look up a contact, select UofM LDAP from the Directories group in the Address Book.
