The University of Manitoba is in the process of migrating to Microsoft Exchange, an integrated system that along with Microsoft's Active Directory, provides a complete solution for file and print sharing, email, calendar, and collaborative communication.

IST already offers Email and Calendar, along with File and Print Sharing.  Why do we need to change to a new system?

While the University already has these systems in place, as technology and user expectations evolve, it is important that IST be able to offer systems that meet user expectations, while providing a long term sustainable solutions.

Our current Calendar program will no longer be supported by Oracle, requiring it to be upgraded. Our file and print system also requires a significant upgrade, and IST has heard the requests that the email system be improved beyond what is offered today.

To ensure that the University selected the best option to position us for success in the future Gartner Consulting was brought in to review our needs. After reviewing the needs of the University as a whole, Gartner recommended that Microsoft's Active Directory and Exchange products are the best solution.

What are the Benefits of Active Directory and Exchange?

• A calendar that is fully integrated with Email.
• A calendar that can by synced across many devices.
  eg: Desktop, Laptop, Smartphone, etc.
• A single calendar that will be used by all staff.
• Email that can be synced across many devices.
• Improved storage capacity for email. Users will see their available storage quadruple!
• Improved speed.
• In the future options such as chat, Sharepoint, and other collaborative tools will all be offered through single integrated option, requiring fewer programs, and fewer passwords then what is required today.
