Preface

The Canadian Catholic Historical Association, founded on June 3rd, 1933, has been successful in its endeavours - to arouse interest in the History of the Church in Canada. The proof of this lies in its twenty-seven years of service to the general public, in the stimulation of interest created by the publication of many and various essays, and in the growing list of members in its two sections, French and English. The personality of the authors and the variety of their studies vouch for the vitality of the Society and keenness for research.

Members of the Association are always pleased to peruse, at their leisure, the Annual Report presented orally at the various meetings. The publication of this report also provides the opportunity of reading those papers set forth by the other section. The accumulation of these annual reports enriches our knowledge of the religious history of Canada. The need for a detailed index was felt by many - such as writers, students and professors - desirous of rapidly uncovering brief and solid syntheses on various subjects. The Silver Jubilee of our Society was a favourable occasion to under take and complete the task.

This Index would not have been possible without the generous assistance of :

Reverend Honorius Provost and Mr. Charles Henry, respective presidents of the French and English sections, who launched the project and obtained the necessary funds;
Canada Council's substantial grant;
The Canadian Historical Association which has endorsed the request of our Society;
Reverend Father Edgar Thivierge, O.M.I., the outgoing Treasurer of the French section, and Mr. Conrad Charlebois, its Secretary;
Dr. Lucien Brault, who has prepared a clear and comprehensive index.

It is with deep gratitude, therefore, and pride that the Canadian Catholic Historical Association presents to the public the INDEX of its 25 Annual Reports.

Explanatory Note

The main purpose of this Index is to facilitate the task of research workers who wish to consult the Transactions of the first twenty-five years of existence of the Association.

Due to certain circumstances, it has been impossible to strictly follow all the technical principles for an index. The year mentioned with each item is the first year shown on the Reports; e.g. for the Reports of 1933-1934, 1935-1936, or 1949-1950, etc., only the year 1933, or 1935 or 1949 is given. With the exception of 1933. the pagination refers to the English or the French section according to the language of the item. When the listing could be either French or English, the letter "f" is added to the French reference.

Alphabetical order is not strictly followed on account of difficulties arising from the use of two languages. In order to facilitate the work of research workers, items on the same subject are classified together. Punctuation in the references has been purposely omitted.
