Father Roderick Vonhögen, a Roman Catholic priest from the Archdiocese of Utrecht, Amersfoort, Netherlands, began his first “podcast” while on a trip to Rome when Pope John Paul II was first hospitalized as a way of updating Catholics on the status of the Pope.

A podcast is a digital audio or video production file that is distributed over the Internet for playback on portable media players (iPod) and personal computers. You can subscribe to podcasts, so that they are automatically downloaded to your computer as soon as a new show is posted.  Today more than 100,000 SQPN shows are downloaded every month by Catholics and non-Catholics alike.

After F r. Vonhögen’s initial success with the Vatican podcast he established the non-profit Star Quest Production Network  (SQPN), with their headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. SQPN specializes in the production of audio and video programs faithful to the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church.

The podcasts cover religious and non-religious issues including music, travel, humor, soundseeing tours, mini-documentaries, interviews, movies and television, food and nutrition, recent news, and, of course, podcasting.  Some of the titles of the podcast include:

SQPN's “mission is to respond to the Church’s call to use the media for religious information, for evangelization and catechesis and for formation and education.  The podcasts are made in different languages and are aimed at an international audience. They focus on building bridges the dominant popular culture of the Western world and the religious culture and tradition of the Catholic Church in order to reach an audience that has little or no relationship with that Church.”
