All creatures sleep.

Some doze in hands
on chairs, or rocks.

First published as a picture book (CM, Vol. 11. No. 16, April 15, 2005) dealing with the concept that all living things sleep, The Book of ZZZs has been reissued as a board book. In addition to the book's original size of 21 cm x 28 cm being reduced to 14 cm x 18 cm, the book's number of pages have been cut from 24 to 14. In the main, the page reductions occurred on what were previously double page spreads wherein two photo images were being used to illustrate the same idea. For example, in the original, the text "Some doze in hands" was illustrated with two colour photos, one showing a sleeping puppy in someone's hands and the other, a baby asleep in a person's hands. Now, only the former illustration exists. In a few instances, text and its accompanying illustration have been entirely dropped as occurred with "[Some doze] in arms" which had preceded the aforementioned "in hands" text. Only one addition has been made to the book's brief text, and that occurred with the original "Some like the sunlight" to which has been added "at home."

Overall, the changes made to The Book of ZZZs to transform it into a board book have not reduced its value to young "readers." The combination of photos of sleeping animal and babies will definitely appeal to toddlers new to books, and the illustrations contain enough detail that they can form a basis for further discussion between the viewer and the book’s older reader.

Recommended.
