Reviewed by Andrew Pope. Volume 12 Number 6 1984 November A well-produced book, Amphibians and Reptiles of Nova Scotia is not a general guide to reptiles and amphibians. In some respects, it is much more. The detailed descriptions of each species covered, including charts and graphs of various measurements made on sets of specimens, exceed the information provided in the traditional field guide. In addition, there are chapters on fossils, the history of herpetology in Nova Scotia, and sightings of supposed sea serpents. The title, however, indicates the major limitation on the contents of this book. It is restricted to the twenty-five species that occur in Nova Scotia. As well organized and illustrated as this is, it is most suitable for libraries in the Maritimes. While the poster is intended as a supplement to the book, Amphibians and Reptiles of Nova Scotia, and contains drawings of the twenty-five species it covers, the poster might find greater use as a classroom aid for younger students than for those to whom the book is directed.
