Volume 12 Number 5
1984 September

Written by Doris Shadbolt, author of the book, The Art of Emily Carr (Douglas & Mclntyre, 1979), this package presents the life and artistic achievement of the British Columbian painter. Although the approach is biographical, considerable emphasis is given to Emily's use of various media, styles, and techniques such as the sense of movement in her portrayal of forests and skies. In the filmstrip, black-and-white photographs are combined with excellent colour reproductions of Emily's paintings, many of which produce an almost three-dimensional effect. Two female narrators, one reading excerpts from Emily's own books, provide the commentary. The co-ordination between the narration and the visuals is consistently appropriate. Highly recommended.
