The University of Manitoba Faculty of Law invites applications for a tenure-track or tenured position (Position Number 21397) at the Assistant, Associate or Professor rank, or if the qualifications merit, a full-time appointment at the rank of Instructor, to begin July 1, 2016. The position is subject to final budgetary approval. The Faculty encourages diverse and interdisciplinary approaches to law and is particularly seeking candidates who engage clinical/experiential approaches to teaching and learning. We especially encourage applications from candidates whose research and teaching interests focus on advocacy, criminal law and procedure, evidence, negotiation, and/or private law areas.
The Faculty is seeking outstanding candidates who will contribute actively to the life of the academic community at the University of Manitoba and beyond. The main criterion is academic excellence, or a demonstrated potential for excellence, as reflected in the candidate’s scholarly and teaching record. The successful candidate will exhibit strong potential for innovative and high quality scholarly research leading to peer assessed publications, as well as for outstanding teaching contributions and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence. The successful candidate will also be expected to make substantive contributions through service to the Faculty, to the University, and/or to the broader community. Applicants must have completed, or be close to completing, graduate studies in law or a related field. Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba has approximately 300 J.D. students and an LL.M. program. It is home to the Centre for Human Rights Research, the Asper Chair in International Business and Trade Law and the Desautels Centre for Private Enterprise and the Law. A number of journals are based at the Faculty: the Canadian Journal of Human Rights; the Manitoba Law Journal and Underneath the Golden Boy; and the Asper Review of International Business & Trade Law. The Faculty is integrating opportunities for J.D. students to experience part of their legal education in French. The University of Manitoba, the province’s only research intensive university, has a student population of over 28,000 and is located in Winnipeg, Manitoba’s capital city (population approximately 800,000). Recently recognized by National Geographic Traveler magazine, Winnipeg has all the facilities of a major centre, with the atmosphere of a smaller, friendlier city. It has a rich cultural environment, including symphony, opera, dance, theatre, professional sports and ethnic festivals, and offers access to some of the most beautiful lake country and recreational facilities in North America. Excellent private and public schools are available that teach in English, French and other international languages.
