December 2002
The Centre was pleased to receive a multimedia disk about Ukrainian Christmas from the Ukrainian composer Alexander Sparinsky. It is a "mini-encyclopedia" on one cd, containing video, audio and text files. What follows is an excerpt from his letter to us that accompanied this disk.
By profession I am a composer-musicologist and a musical producer: for nine years I have been staging such all-Ukrainian events as New Year's, Independence Day, Christmas, Kyiv Day, etc. At the same time I am working on contemporary Ukrainian productions; soon I will complete a multimedia disc about the rites associated with the Spring cycle in Ukraine.
I have been conducting artistic courses and concerts in Ukrainian centres in Europe and Australia for almost ten years. I can most certainly attribute my immersion in the roots of national music and the replication of Ukrainian traditions in contemporary music - to you, the citizens of the Diaspora. It is you, who have taught me to foster the language and the culture, to respect folk music, and raised my consciousness as a Ukrainian and I am thankful to you for it. I hope that my current artistic activity, specifically, as a composer and a producer, which is featured in Ukraine, in the Diaspora and in the world - is at least partial repayment of the debt to my countrymen, friends and to all people...
Respectfully,
Alexander Sparinsky, composer
