MEMOIR WORKSHOP (6 WEEKS ONLINE), Fall 2020 Wednesdays 4:00-5:30 PM (September 23rd -October 28th, 2020)

“How is it possible to bring order out of memory? I should like to begin at the beginning, patiently, like a weaver at his loom. I should like to say, ‘This is the place to start; there can be no other.’” Beryl Markham
“You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better. ~Anne Lamott
“I believe that the memoir is the novel of the 21st century; it’s an amazing form that we haven’t even begun to tap…we’re just getting started figuring out what the rules are. ~Susan Cheever
Memoirists will workshop a short essay or an opening chapter in a supportive but honest community of writers. The focus of the class will be your own work, in addition to receiving and providing thoughtful editorial feedback on pieces of writing. Please be prepared to submit a piece of creative nonfiction (up to 7 pages double-spaced max, 12 size font, Times New Roman).
The first class will include exercises for beginning a memoir and self-care strategies, and we will examine some challenges and limitations of the form; during the final class, we will explore revision techniques and publishing avenues (i.e. agents, small presses, contests) depending on the workshop’s needs and interests.
Note: This workshop is limited to 12 students and will be conducted via Zoom. Memoirists of all levels and experiences are welcome, but participants should be fairly motivated and committed to ensuring that they submit work on time and participate by preparing feedback on classmates’ work. Because of the personal nature of the genre, please remember to be respectful, mindful, and courteous in your written and spoken comments. Thank-you!
