Age-Friendly Communities - CURA
For students

Students have many opportunities to attain valuable experience with the Age-Friendly Communities CURA project.

Each year, the project can accommodate research assistants employing per year:

  • one undergraduate
  • two Masters
  • one PhD student
  • one postdoctoral fellow (who will receive further training to launch his or her career).

Research assistant opportunities

The budget allows employment of four research assistants per year, specifically:

  • One undergraduate student employed at $12.00/hour for 450 hours per year
    (e.g., the student could be employed over the summer for 13 weeks at 35 hours/week or be employed part-time over the year).
  • Two Masters students employed at the Social Sciences Human Resources Council (SSHRC) stipend of $12,000 per year or 750 hours per year.
    (e.g., the student could be employed full time over the summer and part time during the rest of the year, or employed part-time over the year)
  • One PhD student employed at the SSHRC stipend of $15,000 per year or 750 hours per year.
    (e.g., the student could be employed full time over the summer and part time during the rest of the year, or employed part-time over the year).

Duties

Students who are paid through the Age-Friendly Communities Research Alliance are expected to contribute to the program of research by being involved in various activities, including

  • conducting literature reviews;
  • conducting interviews;
  • assisting with focus groups;
  • transcribing of interviews or focus groups;
  • data coding and entry;
  • assisting with data analyses;
  • assisting in the preparation of technical reports, journal articles, materials for lay audiences, presentations, or grant applications.

To apply for a research assistant position

Students must submit a written statement of interest to the Steering committee (Chair: Dr. Verena Menec) outlining their interest in the Age-Friendly Communities Research Alliance and how their experience fits with the program of research.


Other opportunities

Apart from paid research assistant positions, there are also opportunities for students to embed their Honours, Masters, or PhD theses into the Age-Friendly Communities Research Alliance program of research. In this case, students may use data collected as part of the Alliance research or consult project partners, etc.

To take part in other project opportunities

Students must submit a written statement of interest to the Steering committee (Chair: Dr. Verena Menec) outlining how their thesis fits with the objectives of the Age-Friendly Communities Research Alliance, and identify the types data, contacts, or services they wish to access.
