Maire McDermott
Sustainability Coordinator

Maire is the University of Manitoba's first Sustainability Coordinator.  Her main responsibilities as coordinator are to advocate for and facilitate the implementation of projects that lead to a more sustainable U of M and to engage the University community to contribute to a sustainable campus through education and action.  Currently Maire is spending most of her time working with the University of Manitoba Sustainability Committee to develop a comprehensive Sustainability Strategy.   Maire earned her Master's in Natural Resources Management at the University of Manitoba's Natural Resources Institute where she researched the capacity for environmental education in a small town in northern India.

 

Ophelia Morris
Waste Prevention Coordinator

Ophelia is the University of Manitoba's Waste Prevention and Recycling Coordinator. Since starting at the University of Manitoba in 2006, Ophelia has expanded the campus recycling programs to include all classrooms and meeting rooms. The U of M Re-shop was openend in February 2008 under her tenure.   Ophelia earned her Masters of Environmental Science from Memorial University of Newfoundland and has taken her love of Waste Management from the east coast of Newfoundland to British Columbia and all the way to Santiago, Chile where she promoted the 3R’s and assisted communities in setting up recycling and organics centres. She moved to Winnipeg in 2003 and spent 3 years as the Compost Action Coordinator at Resource Conservation Manitoba (Green Action Centre) helping the centre educate Manitobans on backyard composting while recruiting, training and retaining a base of 60 Master Composter Volunteers.
