FAILED GRADE -- What to do

 


WHAT IS A FAILED GRADE

  1. A grade of "C", or lower, in ANY course 
  2. A semester GPA below 3.0
  3. Any student caught cheating or committing plagiarism will automatically receive an "F" as the semester grade in the course

 

CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH A RECOMMENDATION WILL BE CONSIDERED

  1. The student must have a minimum "Degree Grade Point Average" (GPA) of 3.0 with no grade below C+ 
  2. Students who fail to maintain the specified grades will be required to withdraw unless a Departmental Remedial Recommendation is approved by the
    1. Advisor
    2. Department
    3. FGS
  3. A student may be permitted to remove deficiencies in grades (only once for each course to a maximum of 6 credit hours of course-work) by either of the following options
    1. repeating the course
    2. taking an equivalent substitute course
      1. The Dept. must submit a "Recommendation for Dealing with a Failed Grade Form" to FGS within 10-days of notification
      2. Actions for dealing with a failed grade must be taken and satisfactorily completed within one academic year
      3. If a course is repeated or replaced, the highest grade obtained will be used in the determination of the degree grade point average

 

TIME LIMITS

  1. The Dept. must submit a "Recommendation for Dealing with a Failed Grade Form" to FGS within 10-days of notification
  2. The student must enroll in, and the final grade for the REPLACEMENT course must be submitted by the end of the term following the Failed course

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  1. When a graduate student is required to withdraw from a program of study, the notation on the academic record will be: “Required to Withdraw”;  Voluntary withdrawal from a program is not permitted once the grades have been declared and indicate that the student has failed to achieve the required minimum.
  2. Departmental recommendations supersede student requests for voluntary withdrawal.
  3. A student who has been required to withdraw from a graduate program at The University of Manitoba may be permitted to enroll in another graduate program only if the application for admission is approved by the Dean of Graduate Studies or designate.
