The Case-in-Points archived here are the products of collaborative case study research, by each student and a professional practitioner, conducted within the context of the capstone Professional Planning Practice course. Professional Practice course wrapped up with an Exhibit and Summary / Overview of the Case-in-point work held April 15 at MPPI Office 137 Bannatyne.



'Taking the Pulse of Practice'
A joint initiative of the UofM City Planning program and MPPI's Academic Affairs and Professional Development Committee, the awards recognise collaborative case study research projects, by UMCP planning students and Manitoba practitioners, taking the pulse of planning practice.
MPPI Council members, mentors and collaborators attended, along with recent MCP grads (2003-2004). City Councillor Mike Pagtakhan (lower right) offered a wonderful 'convocation' address, referring city politics and city planning, sharing his admiration for the profession. Students presented their Case-in-point topics. Myra Cruz (centre lower left) was presented with the CIP award.
2003 MPPI Student Case-in Point Awards
The first-ever MPPI Student Case-in-Point Awards were featured at the recent MPPI annual conference. A joint initiative of the UofM City Planning program and MPPI's Academic Affairs and Professional Development Committee, the awards recognise collaborative case study research projects, by UMCP planning students and Manitoba practitioners, taking the pulse of planning practice. The jury (Kristy LeBaron - Chair; David Jopling; and Jennifer Rogers) reviewed the submissions and decided as follows:
Grand Award Winner ($200.00 Cash Prize, plus complimentary annual conference registration)
* Roger Lam (in collaboration with Bill Budd) - "Approaches to Planning in a Cross-Cultural Setting: Planning to manage the development of on-farm small-scale industries in the South Interlake Planning District"
Special Commendations ($50.00 Cash Prizes, plus complimentary annual conference registration)
* Gordon McGonigal (in collaboration with Diana Emerson) - "The Moray Street Extension - The Public as design team member"
* Myra Arado Cruz (in collaboration with Valdene Buckley) -"Neeginan: Our Place - The Rebirth of Winnipeg's North Main Street"

2002 MPPI Student Case-in Point Awards
Students first displayed their 'Case-in-Point' Exhibits at an MPPI event in April. Dr. Ian Wight introduced Alumnus Michael Dudley who gave the inaguaral Alumnus talk on the subject of 'The Geo-Politics and Geo-Ethics of Planning in a Time of War', a paper to appear in next issue of Planners' Network.
David Palubeski, President, CIP; Harry Finnigan, Director of Planning and Development, City of Winnipeg; and Linda McFadyen, President, MPPI addressed the topic "Taking the Pulse of Planning in Manitoba (Post-Brandon Planning Conference 2003). Closing remarks were made by Dr. Ian Skelton.
