This page reports on recent events of MPPI involving students and is a quick link to the MPPI and CIP websites.

An annual event is the M2 year wrap up presentations of Taking the Pulse of Practice. This is usually held in the MPPI office. Students present a summary of their case to invited MPPI members and usually a Council Member or City official.

MPPI Mentorship Evening (2004)
The MPPI Academic Affairs & Professional Development Committee arranged the 6th annual Mentorship Program Wine & Cheese Event! Please with food, drink and stimulating conversations, to unveil the 'new and improved' Mentorship Program!
Where: The Forks Market Atrium.
What: An introduction to the new Mentorship Program, a chance to meet new and returning City Planning students and an opportunity to mingle with other professionals! In 2002 the new and improved program was launched. Mentorship Program, members of the AA&PD committee, with assistance from the department of City Planning and the University of Manitoba Association of Planning Students (UMAPS), listened to and learned from past participants of the Program about what they enjoyed and what changes they would like to see. Using this feedback, the committee restructured the Mentorship Program to better address these mentor and student needs. See the MPPI website for more details including the revised Mentorship Guidebook. For more information contact: Donovan Toews at dtoews@ndlea.com

World Town Planning Day 2001 : The Manitoba Professional Planners Institute arranged a design charrette Nov 2-3, at the Centro Caboto, 1055 Wilkes Avenue. The charrette addressing the to be vacated Canadian Forces Base Kapyong Barracks on Kenaston Ave. CP students were asked to record and participate in the activities. Participants included members representing the various professional institutes for Landscape Architects, Architects, Interior Designers and Engineers. Prof. van Vliet made a short presentation on more sustainable urban design for the briefing. Dean Witty facilitated the event.

Excerpt from the MPPI press release:

Winnipeg MB – Members of Manitoba’s four professional design associations will commemorate November 8, the 52nd annual World Town Planning Day (WTPD) by holding a design charrette on the Kapyong Barracks site. The design charrette, hosted by the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute (MPPI), the local affiliate of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) will take place on Saturday, November 3. Professional design associations co-hosting the event include the Manitoba Association of Architects (MAA), the Manitoba Association of Landscape Architects (MALA), and the Professional Interior Designers Institute of Manitoba (PIDIM).

In proclaiming November 8th as World Town Planning Day, Premier Gary Doer recognized "the contribution that sound planning makes to the quality of our settlements and environment," and the "accomplishments made in the collective decisions concerning our cities and regions that bring quality and meaning to our lives."

According to Chris Leach, President of the Manitoba Professional Planners Institute, "World Town Planning Day acknowledges the tremendous contribution made by the professional planning and design community in Manitoba towards enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. We are pleased to celebrate this day with the participation and support of all the professional design associations in the province."

The Kapyong Barracks site, generally located on the west side of Kenaston Boulevard between Wilkes and Grant Avenues, is currently occupied by the Canadian Armed Forces. The site has been deemed surplus by the military and is scheduled to be closed in the next few years. Members will participate in this intensive one-day design charrette in order to generate potential ideas, options and alternative uses for the site that will help stimulate public dialogue regarding the future of the site.

A design charrette is an intensive interdisciplinary planning and design exercise intended to generate a number of design solutions for a particular site over a short period of time. The charrette is intended to stimulate analysis, debate and ideas that are rooted in the site’s context, as well as the physical, social, cultural, economic, and ecological setting. A design charrette will create options and alternatives, without compromising the interests of various communities.

WTPD, officially celebrated on November 8th, was founded in 1949 by the late Professor Carlos Maria della Paolera of the University of Buenos Aires to advance public and professional interest in planning, both locally and abroad. The celebration now includes 30 countries on four continents, and continues to grow each year. WTPD is promoted internationally by the International Society of City and Regional Planners, headquartered at The Hague in The Netherlands.
