Students are sought that are enrolled in University programs including Agroecology, Agronomy, Biology, Botany, Engineering, Entomology, Environment, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Physical Geography, Plant Pathology, and Soil Science. Preference will be given to those in program senior years with excellent academic achievement. Salary is dependent upon the student’s program year as set out by the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences pay guidelines.
Interested students should email Dr. Mario Tenuta, Canada Research Chair in Applied Soil Ecology at tenutam@cc.umanitoba.ca a resume that includes, a) earliest possible start date, b) academic program and average GPA, and relevant experience through past jobs, c) courses, and d) farming or plant rearing should be included. Students in co-op programs are welcome to apply as are students eligible for NSERC Undergraduate Research Assistantships (GPA > 3.9/4.5). Deadline for resumes is February 10, 2012 with interviews to commence February 27.

Graduate Position in Stable Nitrogen Isotope Techniques and Nitrous Oxide Emisisons at the University of Manitoba
The Soil Ecology Laboratory at the University of Manitoba is seeking a highly motivated and talented M.Sc. or Ph.D. student for the project “Development of a Stable Nitrogen Isotope Technique for Source Partition and N 2O:N 2 Ratio Determination of N 2O Emissions from Soil ”. The project involves detailed tracking of native and labelled nitrogen in soil in addition to partitioning of label into gaseous products and in the soil-plant system. Only students with exceptional academic history (GPA > 3.5/4.0) will be considered. The position will be open until an excellent candidate is found. The project is to start as soon as availability of the student and graduate acceptance procedures have been completed. The project is of great importance to the commodity groups, farmers, the fertilizer industry and policy makers, thus frequent communication as reports and presentations with project sponsors is required. The candidate will have exceptional abilities to communicate with the partners and have advanced understanding of nitrogen cycling and Canadian crop production systems.
Dr. Tenuta is the Canada Research Chair in Applied Soil Ecology with a laboratory that is very active with state-of-the-art facilities and a diverse array of multidisciplinary projects. The City of Winnipeg is a cosmopolitan large city offering a vast array of activities. Winnipeg is well situated for easy access to the U.S., Canadian Shield Country, Open Prairies, Boreal Forest and Subarctic Canada. For more information on this exciting graduate program opportunity please send a CV, copy of transcripts and list of referees by email to Dr. Mario Tenuta, Canada Research Chair in Applied Soil Ecology, tenutam@cc.umanitoba.ca .

Graduate Positions in Land Remediation
Two graduate student positions at the M.Sc. level are available in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Manitoba (www.umanitoba.ca/faculties/afs/soil_science/). The research will focus on the use of wetland systems and traditional phytoremediation for remediation of decommissioned municipal lagoons. The positions are available starting September 2011 but a later start date can be accommodated if necessary. Stipends of $16,500 per year will be available to successful candidates. Individuals with a background in soil science, environmental science, agronomy, ecology, natural resources or a closely related field are encouraged to apply. Inquiries accompanied by CVs should be directed to Dr. Francis Zvomuya (zvomuyaf@cc.umanitoba.ca), Associate Professor of Land Remediation, Department of Soil Science, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Graduate Position in Atmospheric Dispersion over Forests
Starting September 2011, a graduate student position at the M.Sc. level is available in the Department of Soil Science at the University of Manitoba (www.umanitoba.ca/afs/soil_science). The research focuses on improving our knowledge of atmospheric dispersion climatologies over Canadian forests to aid forest managers in decisions related to aerial spraying for insect control. The project is partially supported by the Spray Efficacy Research Group (SERG International: www.sergreport.net/). The project will include statistical analyses of atmospheric dispersion conditions using data from the Fluxnet/Canadian Carbon Program flux towers at various locations across Canada (www.fluxnet-canada.ca/). A stipend of $16,500/yr is available. Interested students should have a science background in tmospheric science, physical geography, engineering, forestry, agriculture or environmental science. Individuals interested in learning more about this exciting graduate opportunity or in applying should contact Dr. Brian Amiro (brian_amiro@umanitoba.ca), Professor of Agriculture and Forest Micrometeorology, Department of Soil Science, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
