DISEASES AND PESTS

  1. New methods for detection of potato pathogens: In addition to classical methods, DNA-based techniques will be explored for a more accurate and faster detection of specific potato pathogens.

  2. New methods for control of potato diseases in the field and during storage: The use of chemical-free methods will be investigated in order to provide sustainable, safer, and environmentally sound methods for control of potato pathogens, especially the one causing late blight.

  3. Simple economic thresholds for Colorado potato beetle and potato flea beetles

  4. Field sampling schemes for Colorado potato beetles that are applicable to Manitoba conditions

  5. Appreciation for the effects on potato yield of interactions between pests insects and between insects and diseases of potato.

  6. Interactions of Colorado potato beetles and fungal diseases: Improvement of methods to predict time of appearance and number of generations of the Colorado potato beetle with a view to incorporating results into the Agroemeteorological sensor network.
