Classes for the Seminar Course will normally run every Tuesday beginning at 1:00 pm over both terms except when otherwise indicated.

COURSE OUTLINE

FIRST TERM

Lectures :

Several introductory lectures will cover aspects of preparing for and presenting seminars and posters. There will be lectures on Sept 22, 29, and Oct 6 and 13.

Student Research Presentations: (Students will employ only transparencies as visual aids working with an overhead projector during first term. All presentations will be videotaped for student feedback during first term.)

 

I. First Presentations (Oct. 27 and Nov. 03)

A. Research Paper

-Select a current research paper.

-Organize material (all or part) for a 10 minute presentation.

-Use both figures and tables in presentation materials.

-Show selected paper to Dr. McVetty by Oct 20, 2009 for approval.

 

B. Thesis topic (presented immediately following part A)

- Present a 2-3 minute overview of your thesis topic, introduce the problem and your objectives.

- No notes or transparencies are to be used for this part of presentation. You should speak without any assists.

 

II. Second Presentations (Nov 17 and 24)

-A Review or Overview that might be directed at a more general audience

-10 min.

-Topic area - A significant issue in agriculture. eg. stubble burning, manure management, sustainable agriculture, genetic engineering of food crops, any ethical issue, etc. The topic should NOT be closely related to your thesis research.

-Submit title to Dr. McVetty by Nov. 10 for approval.

SECOND TERM

Main Seminar Presentations :

There will be one presentation per week in the regular Tuesday class period beginning on Jan 19, 2010. Students will employ Power Point and a digital projector for visual aids. All members of the Department are invited to attend these seminars.

-A 35 ( plus or minus 2) minute presentation based on your research topic. (Timing is important! Seminars that are not close to time will need to be repeated.)

-Presentation should integrate your research and research objectives with existing related research.

-Must present a number of tables and figures.

-Title of your presentation must be submitted before the Christmas break to allow a listing of all second term seminars to be posted.

-A presentation outline should be submitted to Dr. Brule-Babel by Jan 5. for Jan 19 - Feb 9 presentations and by Feb 9 for Feb 23 - Mar 9 presentations and by Mar 2 for Mar 16 - Mar 30 presentations.

-A final title must be submitted no later than one week before presentation for the seminar announcement poster.

-To be handed-in at time of presentation:

- A printed copy of all images (6/page) (text, Figures and Tables).

 

Chairing of Second Term Seminars:

-The last speaker in the second term will act as chairperson for the first seminar session and all subsequent sessions will be chaired by the previous week's speaker. The chair is responsible for introducing the speaker, accepting questions from the audience and thanking the speaker on behalf of the audience. To help the class develop questioning skills and ensure class participation the chair should accept the first 2-3 questions from class members. The chair is also responsible for ensuring that the seminar room is set up appropriately and that the necessary equipment is present and working properly.

Poster Presentation :

Each class member will be responsible for preparation of a poster using Power Point that could be delivered at a conference. The posters are to be developed electronically in Power Point and will be presented as virtual posters on April 6 , 2010 using a digital projector (as apposed to actually printing them).

Feedback:

Feedback will be given to the student following each presentation.

Grading :

First term presentations 20%

Content and arrangement of material in major seminar 35%

Presentation 25%

Comprehension (Knowledge of material and ability to answer questions) 10%

Poster 10%

Final Grade Pass/Fail
