  • Weed Ecology

a) Weed classification systems

b) Weed autecology – seedbanks, recruitment, interference, reproduction, dispersal

c) Weed community structure – factors affecting structure and implications

 

2) Weed Management

a) Basic principles, scouting, thresholds, critical period of weed control

b) Cultural weed management – the competitive balance, mulching, weed seed management

c) Physical weed management – tillage, mowing, burning

d) Chemical weed management – herbicides, application technology, resistance

e) Biological weed management – various approaches

f) Integrated weed management – ‘many little hammers’

 

Required Texts:

Lab manual available at the University of Manitoba Bookstore.

No other required texts. Recommended texts and resource material will be placed on reserve in the William R. Newman Library in the Agriculture Building.

 Assignment

Assignments are due on dates specified by lecture or lab instructors. Late assignments will only be accepted if permission is obtained from the course instructor and are subject to a late penalty of 10% per day. Students unable to submit assignments on the due dates are advised to contact the course instructor as soon as possible.

Note

Students are required to pass both the laboratory and lecture sections of the course in order to pass the course. Students are also reminded to familiarize themselves with general academic regulations and policy of the University of Manitoba (see University Calendar) and in particular those sections dealing with plagiarism and cheating, and examination-impersonation. These are serious offences which can lead to academic suspension or expulsion.
