Funding announced for new NCLE Agricultural By-Products Processing Research and Demonstration Facility
Media Release Excerpt: The Governments of Canada and Manitoba are investing $999,500 in a new research facility to support the province's livestock producers in addressing production efficiency and environmental challenges. Funding from the Canada-Manitoba Western Economic Partnership Agreement (WEPA). This new facility is an initiative of Manitoba Pork and the National Centre for Livestock and the Environment. Management team for the Bruce D. Campbell Farm and Food Discovery Centre now in place
The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences is pleased to announce the appointment of Guy Robbins as visitor services manager and Lorrie Koroscil as assistant manager of the Discovery Centre, expected to officially open in spring 2011. See the release
NCLE delegation visits Texas A&M University
Texas AgriLife Research at Texas A&M hosted Christine Rawluk (NCLE Research Development Coordinator), Kim Ominski (forage-beef systems researcher) and Julieta Frank (pricing, marketing and risk management researcher) during their visit February 3rd and 4th. Research and extension at Texas AgriLife takes place at Texas A&M and thirteen R&E Centers around the state. The group met with individuals from a number of these centers and gained some hands-on learning at a nearby beef research center. The group also met with the Texas Farm Bureau, who visited NCLE last fall as part of a cross-Canada mission. The visit was arranged by the AAFC Market and Industry Services Branch Manitoba office and the Canadian Consulate General in Dallas.
Official naming ceremony and groundbreaking for the
Bruce D. Campbell Farm & Food Discovery Centre
The Discovery Centre will feature exhibits of all aspects of food production, from farming practices to retail sales and will showcase the broad range of careers in the agri-food industry. With 30,000 visitors anticipated annually, the Discovery Centre will be a valuable food production experience for students and families of all ages. The ceremony for the 8,280 square-foot facility, formerly known as the Glenlea Farm Education Centre, took place on December 14, 2009 at the Glenlea Research Station. NCLE and Animal Science dairy research showcased at annual Manitoba Dairy Conference
Kees Plaizer, dairy researcher, highlighted some of the dairy research taking place at the Glenlea Research Station as well as some current and upcoming multi-disciplinary NCLE projects during an invited presentation. The University of Manitoba/NCLE research display at the conference provided a good opportunity for Kees and Christine Rawluk, NCLE Research Development Coordinator, to also have one-on-one conversations with conference goers.
NCLE and partners MLMMI, MAFRI and the Manitoba Manure Management Advisory Committee host “Achieving Manure P Balance in Manitoba - Technical Workshop”
On November 30th and December 1st, government, industry and research leaders came together to share current information on available feed, crop/land and manure management options for balancing P and to identify research and extension priorities and develop strategically-minded, objectives-oriented action plans that will help Manitoba livestock producers manage manure phosphorus for balance. Look for a special newsletter feature issue on “Achieving Manure P Balance in Manitoba – Strategic Action Plan for Research and Extension” in the new year. Manitoba Cattle Producers Association members visit Glenlea Research Station
On October 6, NCLE hosted members of the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association at the Glenlea Research Station. During the visit researchers described recent forage-beef research projects, emphasizing the value of multidisciplinary research and partnerships in benefiting the sustainability of Manitoba's cattle industry. NCLE/UM researchers Kim Ominksi, Karin Wittenberg, Don Flaten, Laurie Connor, Denis Krause, Mario Tenuta, Gary Crow, Derek Brewin and Julieta Frank, ruminant technician Terri Garner, and NCLE Research Coordinator Christine Rawluk hosted.
Texas Farm Bureau delegates visit the National Centre for Livestock and the Environment
NLCE researchers hosted delegates of the TFB as well as represehtatives of the Canadian Consulate General in Dallas and AAFC, sharing research and Manitoba livestock production information. The TFB included NCLE as part of their trans-Canada visit the first week of September. NCLE researchers Don Flaten, Laurie Connor, Kim Ominski, Kees Plaizier and Nazim Cicek and NCLE Coordinator Christine Rawluk hosted.
NCLE Research Project Featured in ARDI Video Clip
NCLE PhD candidate Joe Ackerman describes his research looking at ways to improve phosphorus recovery and recycling from hog lagoons.
