Dr.
McAllister is a Principal Research Scientist in Ruminant
Microbiology, Nutrition and Biotechnology at the Agriculture
and Agri-Food Canada Research Centre in Lethbridge, AB.
His research focuses on strategies to improve livestock
(beef) production, reduce its effects on the environment,
and enhance on-farm food safety. Recent and ongoing research
projects include strategies to mitigate fecal shedding of
Escherichia coli O157:H7 by cattle (passive immunotherapy,
O157-specific bacteriophage, and dietary interventions such
as Ascophyllum nodosum (brown seaweed) and direct-fed microbials);
characterization and regulation of digestion of forages
and cereal grains in beef cattle diets; composting as a
means of disposal of animal carcasses for containment of
biohazardous agents; assessing the fate of transgenic DNA
ingested by livestock in genetically modified crops used
as feeds; characterizing the effects of tannins on cellulose
digestion by ruminants; studies of antimicrobial resistance
among beef cattle; potential uses of plant extracts as alternatives
to antibiotics in livestock production; and characterization
of methane emissions arising from livestock production.
Dr. McAllister’s research team comprises postdoctoral
fellows, graduate students, technical staff and undergraduate
summer and co-op students. Publications (authored and co
authored) include over 200 refereed scientific manuscripts,
32 scientific reviews, 13 book chapters, and over 400 conference
proceedings and abstracts.
