The quality of carryover seed is typically determined by a number of factors as opposed to one single event or condition. There are many circumstances that can cause seed quality to deteriorate, some of which we can control and some that are inherent to the quality of the seed. Storage conditions, seed health, seed treatments, and the difference in species all play a role in what your carryover seed quality will be after months of sitting in a bag or bin.

Seed should be tested before planting to get an accurate indication of current quality so that decisions can be made as to possible replacement seed or planting rate adjustment. Planting high quality seed is critical to producing a successful crop and it’s imperative that you know the quality of your carryover seed before seeding.
