FIPPA Application for Access

FIPPA, or the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, is a two-part act that covers all records in the control or the custody of the University of Manitoba.

Part 2 of the Act governs access. It states that the purposes of this Act are:

  1. to allow any person a right of access to records in the custody or under the control of public bodies, subject to the limited and specific exceptions set out in this Act;
  2. to allow individuals a right of access to records containing personal information about themselves in the custody or under the control of public bodies, subject ot the limited and specific exceptions set out in this Act; and
  3. to allow individuals a right to request corrections to records containing personal information about themselves in the custody or under the control of public

Individuals can formally apply for access using the Application for Access form. The University has an obligation to assist persons making such a request, and in most cases the university has 30 days in which to respond.

FEES:
The first two hours of search and preparation time for a request are free.  Time in excess of two hours is charged at $15.00 per each half hour. If computer programming or data processing is required the fee is $10.00 for each 15 minutes of work required to respond to the application. 

Estimates of fees for search and preparation time in excess of two hours will be submitted to the requester in advance for approval.  Copying fees may apply.

 

What to do when you need information:

  1. Identify the records you wish to request by consulting the Directory of University of Manitoba FIPPA Records located in the Dafoe Reference Library or the Neil John Maclean Health Sciences Library.
  2. Contact the department where you think the information may be held, and make a request, either orally or in writing.
  3. If information is published or accessible according to university practice or policy, then the information will be provided to you.
  4. If the information is not published or accessible according to university practice or policy, mail or fax your application form or bring it in person to the Access & Privacy Coordinator’s Office.
