There have been significant changes in the copyright environment recently. As educational resources are accessed and used differently than in the past, the University has begun to re-think its approach to copyright so that its educational needs continue to be met. At the same time, the Copyright Act is evolving.

A change in approach is the implementation of Fair Dealing Guidelines at the University of Manitoba. The Guidelines and their supporting documents were prepared by members of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada. The University of Manitoba also signed an agreement with Access Copyright which is in effect from 2011-2015.

Another change at the University is the establishment of a Copyright Office.The Copyright Office will provide educational programs and general advice on copyright issues, coordinate a centralized copyright clearance service and strive to ensure the University maintains a robust compliance program in accordance with the Copyright Act and University policies and guidelines.
