The Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, The University of Manitoba, invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of Food Science (position #AAE666) for appointment as associate professor/ professor with tenure.

The Department of Food Science currently consists of eight academic staff and seven support staff. The Department offers an undergraduate program accredited by the Institute of Food Technologists and a graduate program leading to a Master’s degree. The Department has a vigorous research program and currently administers an interdepartmental Ph.D. program with the Departments of Animal Science and Human Nutritional Sciences.

The Department also offers short courses primarily directed at upgrading the skills of personnel in industry and government and will be directly involved in the research activities of the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals set to open in 2005 in the University of Manitoba's SmartPark.

The Head of the Department of Food Science is expected to provide strong leadership, to administer and participate in the teaching, research and public service activities of the Department and to promote collaboration with other university departments and food related organizations outside the university.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree in food science or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellence in research, education and leadership and will have the capacity to project a vision for the Department. Expertise in functional foods and nutraceuticals is desirable. Sufficient knowledge and interest in the Canadian agri-food industry and willingness to interact effectively with other sectors of the food industry are required.

Effective date of appointment is September 1, 2004. The appointment is for a five-year term, unless specified otherwise at the time of appointment, with the possibility of renewal.
