The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the entire physical plant of the University including the construction, renovations, provision of utility services, and the care and maintenance of all properties.

Under general supervision, the Tractor Operator 2 operates front end loaders, road grader, street sweeper and large agricultural tractors with attachments.  The Tractor Operator II is responsible for maintenance of grounds, roads and parking lots.


  • Operates turf maintenance equipment (mowers, seeders, fertilizer applicators) propelled by large agricultural tractors.
  • Operates front end loaders and grader for clearing snow from roads, parking lots, and ramps.
  • Operates street sweeper
  • Grades and prepares grounds for landscaping projects.
  • Hauls waste materials from construction and demolition sites.
  • Unloads and moves cargo using loaders with buckets, forklift attachments and extendable booms.
  • Assists in response to emergencies such as flooding, snow storms and similar situations.
  • Assists with repairs to equipment; performs regular visual inspections of vehicles including hour meter readings, fluid levels, operation of safety equipment and general roadworthiness; reports deficiencies to supervisor.
  • Assists with the coordination of Campus Beautification Day activities.
  • Operates aerial devices as required.
  • Assists with the orientation and training of other employees within the General Services area.
  • Operates a two-way radio as required.
  • Performs the duties of similar or lower level classifications for which the incumbent is qualified when required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Education to an acceptable level; high school completion preferred.
  • Valid Class 3 driver's license with air brake endorsement.


  • Acceptable related experience.
  • Good driving record as demonstrated by a positive driver’s record.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • A demonstrated ability to operate front end loaders and large agricultural tractors.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts and irregular hours during emergencies and snow removal operations.
  • Understand and be willing to participate in all safety programs and initiatives designed to ensure the well-being of all staff.
