The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the entire physical plant of the University including the construction, renovations, provision of utility services, and the care and maintenance of all properties.

Under general supervision, the Tractor Operator 1 normally operates skid steer loaders, dump trucks and riding mowers.  The Tractor Operator 1 is responsible for maintenance of grounds, roads, parking lots and sidewalks.   


  • Operates riding mowers for lawn maintenance.
  • Operates turf maintenance equipment (seeder, fertilizer applicator, aerator, etc.) propelled by agricultural tractors.
  • Operates sidewalk sweepers.
  • Operates steamers to drain frozen culverts and catch basins.
  • Operates portable pumps.
  • Operates fork lifts and pallet jacks.
  • Operates skid steer loaders for snow clearing and landscaping. 
  • Operates dump trucks to haul snow, debris, soil and gravel.
  • Unloads and moves cargo using skid steer loaders with forklift attachments.
  • Sands roads, parking lots and spreads traction grit on sidewalks and ramps.
  • Performs minor mechanical repairs and daily inspections of vehicles and equipment.
  • Responsible for washing and cleaning interior and exterior of equipment as required.
  • Performs minor repairs to paved areas constructed with asphalt, interlocking bricks, concrete and gravel.
  • Assists with the coordination of Campus Beautification Day activities.
  • Performs the duties of similar or lower level classifications for which the incumbent is qualified when required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Education to an acceptable level; high school completion preferred.
  • Valid Class 3 driver's license with air brake endorsement.


  • Acceptable related experience.
  • Good driving record as demonstrated by a positive driver’s abstract.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • A demonstrated ability to operate skid steer loaders, mowers and dump trucks.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts and irregular hours during emergencies and snow removal operations.
  • Understand and be willing to participate in all safety programs and initiatives designed to ensure the well-being of all staff.
