CHARACTER OF THE JOB

The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the entire physical plant of the University including the construction, renovations, provision of utility services, and the care and maintenance of all properties.

Under general supervision, the Garbage Truck Driver is responsible for the pickup, transportation and disposal of garbage, waste materials and paper for recycling.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operates a tandem axle garbage truck chassis equipped with a rear loading packer to remove waste and paper for recycling from various building locations and transports it for disposal to a City of Winnipeg landfill or a recycling depot.
  • Operates a dump truck to haul waste or paper if garbage truck is unavailable.
  • Follows a scheduled or authorized modified route as required.
  • Operates a two-way radio to communicate with and receive instructions from a supervisor or dispatcher.
  • Responsible for performing daily inspections of vehicle and packer and performs minor maintenance such as monitoring fluid levels, checking for leaks, vehicle lighting, belts, air brake system function, tire pressure and other functions necessary for safe and efficient operation.
  • Responsible for washing and cleaning interior and exterior of vehicle as required.
  • Reports malfunctions and repair requirements to a supervisor.
  • Performs the duties of similar or lower level classifications for which the incumbent is qualified as required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Education to an acceptable level
  • Valid Class 3 driver's license with air brake endorsement.
  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificate.

Experience

·        Acceptable related experience

·        Good knowledge of the location of University buildings, campus layout and City of Winnipeg transportation routes.

·        Good driving record as demonstrated by a positive driver’s abstract.

Skills and Abilities

  • Good communication via a two-way radio
  • Must relate well with staff and others in the department.
  • Effective communication skills in English required.

·         Demonstrated ability to operate a dump truck and a tandem axle garbage truck chassis equipped with a rear loading packer.

  • Understand and be willing to participate in all safety programs and initiatives designed to ensure the well-being of all staff.
