The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the entire physical plant of the University including construction, renovations, the provision of utility services and the care and maintenance of all properties.

Under general supervision, the Controls Mechanic is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of heating equipment, maintenance and repair of related pneumatic and electrical controls, estimating costs of new installations and repairs to existing systems and equipment and maintaining related records.


  • Repairs, maintains, calibrates and adjusts pneumatic, electronic and electrical controls.
  • Installs and commissions new equipment.
  • Investigates and diagnoses complaints re: malfunctioning of equipment used for heating, cooling, air supply, and ventilation.
  • Records hours of work on work orders and daily time sheets.
  • Estimates costs of time and materials required.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Completion of grade 12 or equivalent.
  • Must have an appropriate Certificate of Qualification issued by the Manitoba Department of Labour or an acceptable equivalent.
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 Manitoba Driver's License.


  • Five years of related experience in the HVAC field.
  • Extensive knowledge of all systems presently maintained by the department.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to estimate costs of time and materials required for new installations or repairs to existing systems or equipment.
  • Ability to work alone without direct supervision.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.
  • Ability to read blue prints, understand technical language and manuals.
  • Knowledge and ability to safely and properly repair various types of controls equipment.
  • Must be alert and thorough.
