CHARACTER OF THE JOB

The Physical Plant Department is responsible for the entire physical plant of the University including the construction, renovations, provision of utility services, and the care and maintenance of all properties.

Under general supervision, the Cement Finisher/Groundskeeper is responsible for the preparation, completion and maintenance of projects including the installation and maintenance of interlocking paving stones, wet and dry concrete and its reinforcement, cement finishing, bricklaying, concrete block or stonework, setting up forms and preparing concrete and mortar mixtures and the use of a variety of hardening, curing, caulking and adhesive ingredients. The Cement Finisher/Groundskeeper performs the duties of a Labourer Groundskeeper when required.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepares forms and materials, gravel, sand, crushed stone and other bases for various projects.
  • Mixes, pours and finishes concrete for repairs to stairs, sidewalks, floors, walls, curbs, pits and similar interior and exterior concrete structures.
  • Mixes concrete and mortar according to specific requirements using specialized compounds.
  • Installs interlocking pavers in various patterns according to prepared specifications or industry standards.
  • Lays construction bricks, fire bricks, concrete blocks and stone as required.
  • Performs minor re-pointing of masonry joints.
  • Operates a skid steer loader, agricultural tractor, dump truck, jackhammers and finishing tools typical of the trade.
  • Estimates labour and materials required to perform various new and maintenance projects.
  • Works in cooperation with other departmental employees when alterations to existing facilities and structures are required.
  • Performs the duties of a Labourer Groundskeeper, other similar classifications and assists other department employees as required.
  • Operates a two-way radio as required.
  • Performs other duties characteristic of the classification.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

The minimum qualifications necessary for acceptable (satisfactory) job performance are:

Level of Formal Education

  • Education to an acceptable level
  • Class 4 driver's license with air brake endorsement.
  • Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificate.

Experience

  • Minimum of five years of directly related experience.
  • A sound knowledge of materials, equipment, tools of the trade and procedures involving cement-finishing is required.
  • Acceptable related experience operating mobile equipment such as tractors, skis steer loaders and dump trucks.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read construction drawings, plans and specifications
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in English.

  • Must be capable of performing the duties as assigned.
