University Health Service is located at 104 University Centre Building. It has a mandate to serve all of the University community, including students, staff and their dependents. The clinic is staffed by one-and-a-half female and one male full-time certified family physicians, two registered nurses and office staff. The care provided includes:

  1. all primary care, including care of chronic conditions;

  2. birth control and sexually transmitted disease information and treatment;

  3. prenatal care and obstetrical service;

  4. in hospital care at Victoria General Hospital and St. Boniface General Hospital;

  5. treatment of minor injuries.

The staff also provides group and individual health and lifestyle counselling, e.g. smoking cessation. The University Health Service mandate includes health promotion for the campus and the staff liaise with other Student Affairs directors, UMSU and other student groups to encourage a high standard of personal and community health on campus.

Appointments are preferred but urgent conditions are attended to on a walk-in basis. Emergencies which occur on campus are best dealt with by phoning the Campus Emergency line 555 and the police will arrange for an ambulance. A twenty-four hour medical on-call service is maintained for urgent injuries; a physician can be reached through an answering service (474-8411). Clinic hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday - Friday from September to April and 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May to August.

No information of a confidential or personal nature is released to anyone on or off campus except under the following conditions:

  1. With the knowledge and expressed consent of the individual concerned;

  2. In infrequent conditions of emergency where individual or community health is in danger and consent cannot be obtained, e.g. due to emotional disturbance, unconsciousness, severe injury, mass casualty, and the like.

The physician you consult in the University Health Service is prepared to become your personal physician or to maintain close liaison and consultation with your regular physician whenever this is requested.
